Grazia Deledda (1871-1936) urodziła się w ubogiej sardyńskiej wsi. I choć od 1900 roku mieszkała w Rzymie, to właśnie ojczystą wyspę uczyniła miejscem akcji większości swych utworów. Zainspirowana starymi romansami, sardyńskimi bajkami i legendami zadebiutowała w wieku 15 lat, na łamach ilustrowanego pisma rzymskiego, opowiadaniem "Sardyńska krew". Dorobek pisarki to ok. 30 powieści. Deledda, była drugą kobietą, którą uhonorowano Literacką Nagrodą Nobla (1926). W uzasadnieniu swego wyboru Komitet Noblowski napisał: "za poetyckie dzieła, w których z jaskrawą plastycznością opisuje życie jej ojczystej wyspy, a także za głębię w podejściu do ludzkich problemów w całości".
