"Wojna jest tylko kontynuacją polityki innymi środkami" pisał Carl von Clausewitz. Jego traktat "O naturze wojny", opublikowany po raz pierwszy w 1832 roku, już po śmierci autora, do dziś pozostaje najważniejszą rozprawą poświęconą prowadzeniu działań wojennych, wciąż jest zresztą podstawową lekturą we wszystkich akademiach wojskowych, nie wyłączając amerykańskiej Army War College. Był teoretykiem wojny totalnej, wskazywał na rolę polityków i przywódców w działaniach zbrojnych, jako pierwszy scharakteryzował czynniki decydujące o sukcesie bądź porażce.
Carl Philips Gottlieb von Clausewitz urodził się w 1780 roku w pobliżu Magdeburga. Miał dwanaście lat, kiedy wstąpił do wojska. Jednym z jego przełożonych był wybitny pruski strateg, generał Gerhard von Scharnhorst, który zwrócił uwagę na młodego oficera. Clausewitz został adiutantem księcia Augusta. Walczył przeciwko wojskom Napoleona w latach 1812-1814 (w armii rosyjskiej, m.in. w bitwie pod Borodino) i 1814-1815 (w armii pruskiej). Jako pułkownik dowodził m.in. atakiem kawalerii pruskiej pod Lutzen. W 1815 roku został doradcą szefa sztabu dowódcy III Pruskiego Korpusu, który uniemożliwił Napoleonowi połączenie sił pod Waterloo. Dosłużył się stopnia generała. W latach 1818-1830 był dyrektorem berlińskiej Akademii Wojennej (Allgemeine Kriegschule). Zmarł na cholerę w 1831 roku.
